Portsmouth Football Club History : 1946 – 1971

Once the War was won, league football returned, and with it the expectation that Portsmouth FC could and would take the League and the Cup. Unfortunately Pompey fans were to disappointed when they lost the 1946 / 1947 FA Cup semi-final to Leicester City. They did however take the League title, and set an attendance record which remains unbeaten today (51,385).

Over the next few years Portsmouth FC continued in good form, becoming one of only five English teams to have won back to back titles since the second world war. The latter half of the 1950s were not so fruitful for Pompey and they were relegated in 1959, and then again in 1961 leaving the club floundering in third division. Portsmouth didn’t remain in unfamiliar territory for long, moving back up to the second division the following season with the help of George Smith.
