Portsmouth Football Club History : 1991 – 2001

In 1991 Jim Smith became manager of Portsmouth FC, and swiftly set about changing the teams stability in the competition. With the help of some fresh young talent the club reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup that same year, only losing on penalties to Liverpool. In fact Pompey only missed promotion by one goal (to West Ham United).

Terry Venables arrived as a consultant in 1996 but would later buy the club for a token sum of £1 to become chairman of the club. That season they only managed a quarter final place and didn’t make it to Premier League the qualifiers.

By 1998 Portsmouth’s financial troubles had returned with a vengeance and the club went into administration in December that year. May 1999 saw a rescue deal emerge when Milan Mandaric took over as chairman and began investing immediately.
